There are many different kinds of beeswax lip balms on the market. They are obviously not all the same. They contain different ingredients and the consistency varies significantly from brand to brand. It is important to ponder some of the ingredients used in some of the larger, well-known brands.

Some of the large commercial brands contain a mixture of paraffin wax and beeswax. Paraffin wax is derived from crude oil. This wax is detrimental to your skin because it draws moisture away from your lips. This means that when applying a beeswax/paraffin blended lip balm, you are actually taking moisture away from your lips. More importantly, petroleum based oils are stored by the body as a fat that cannot be used later and have been linked with a near-permanent weight gain. That is why we never use any petroleum products in any of our lip balms!

Another common ingredient in beeswax lip balm is lanolin. In fact, many of the more natural varieties of beeswax balm contain lanolin. Lanolin is derived from the wool in sheep. Extracting lanolin from a sheep’s wool can be compared to a person getting a haircut. However, many people complain that lanolin dries out their lips. The reason it is commonly known to dry out people’s lips is directly related to lanolin frequently containing high levels of pesticides. There are strict requirements ensuring the purity of lanolin in relation to the usage of pesticides on it. However, that said, there are a good amount of pesticides used on this waxy substance. For this reason, much of the population who uses beeswax lip balm containing lanolin reacts negatively to it and there is a common misconception that people have allergies to lanolin when it is really a reaction to the pesticides it contains.
